Painting and Sealing Lead Jigs

Painting/ sealing unpainted lead jigs with chip-resistant paint or clear sealer, such as nail polish or specific jig paints or epoxies.

safe Angling Practice #9:

Painting or sealing unpainted leads jigs with a protective, chip-resistant sealer will help prevent the leaching of lead into the water should the jig get snagged and break off in the water.

Sealing a lead jig, esp. smaller jigs, can also help prevent sickness to any wildlife that happens to ingest or get caught on the jig after it has broken off the angler’s line. While there is no guarantee, the effects of lead poisoning can be minimized, potentially giving the animal time to throw the jig or knock it loose.
