Arkansas Deer Hunter Bags Doe with Antlers

Independence County, Ark. - A local hunter has bagged his first buck of the season, or at least that's what it looked like on the outside.

He hunted down an unusual trophy Monday night, a doe with antlers.

Danny Beaver grabbed his rifle, watched and waited in his deer stand.

"It come out and it's about 356 yards right there," he says of the deer.

Danny took a shot and hauled it off. It wasn't until he got home that he found out it was really a doe.

"We had it hanging up and whenever we started he said 'this ain't what it's supposed to be'," Beaver explains.

The parts Danny and his family found were far from being a buck.

"It didn't have the male parts.. and it had female parts," he continues.

Speechless, Danny went to a game warden's house to report his rare kill.

"He says he hears about one a year like that but he said check it in as a buck," Beaver says.

Arkansas Game and Fish says hormone abnormalities have something to do with a doe growing antlers.

"It's a nice rack you know. It was no trouble telling what it was, you know," the hunter says.

It's an abnormality Danny and his family couldn't spot from these parts, but knew the parts they found up close made this deer season extra special.

"I've heard about them, but I've never dreamed of seeing something like that," he says.

Would you call this a trophy? we ask. "Yeah I guess, it's different!," Beaver responds.

It's different but a proud prize with a story to be told for years to come.

Danny is still trying to figure out what he wants to do with his trophy, whether it's a head mount or European mount.
