MEXICO CITY – Argentine striker Mariano Pavone scored a hat trick to lead Cruz Azul to a 5-1 win over Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday that made it the third Mexican team to advance to the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals. Pavone scored in the 2nd, 22nd and 55th minutes as Cruz Azul secured a 5-2 aggregate victory over Kansas City in the two-leg quarterfinal series. Cruz Azul will play fellow-Mexican side Tijuana in the semifinals. Toluca is the other Mexican team in the final four after defeating the San Jose Earthquakes earlier Wednesday. Argentinas Mauro Formica scored in the 65th minute and Christian Gimenez added a goal four minutes later for Cruz Azul, a runner-up in the 2009 and 2010. Benny Feilhaber scored in the 43rd for the Sporting, the reigning MLS champions. Yasmani Grandal Jersey . Chelsea earned its biggest league victory under Jose Mourinho after the leaders raced into a 2-0 lead in just seven minutes through goals from Samuel Etoo and Andre Schuerrle. "You come to kill and in 10 minutes we destroyed," Mourinho said. "After that? Easy." Not for the referee, as Andre Marriner provided the London derbys big talking point by sending off the wrong Arsenal player after 15 minutes. Although Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain blatantly handled to keep out Eden Hazards shot, it was Kieran Gibbs who was dismissed despite his teammates protests. "Andre is disappointed that he failed to identify the correct player," the league referees body said in a statement. "He expressed his disappointment to Arsenal when he was made aware of the issue." Hazard scored Chelseas third from the resulting penalty, Oscar netted twice and Mohamed Salah completed Wengers misery with his first goal for the leaders. Arsenal saw its title ambitions seriously dented as it fell seven points behind Chelsea, and dropped to fourth. "Its one of the worst days (in my career)," Wenger said. "Its over after 20 minutes and its a long game after that." After the humiliation Wenger did not attend the mandatory post-match news conference, with Arsenal media chief Mark Gonnella saying the team bus had to leave while Mourinho was addressing reporters. The Frenchman couldnt get away quick enough after another gloomy landmark day at Stamford Bridge. His 500th game in charge also saw Arsenal lose at Chelsea, albeit onnly 1-0 in 2005.dddddddddddd The margin of this defeat matched the previous low-point of Wengers 18-year reign – an 8-2 loss at Manchester United. It was also Arsenals third big away loss against its direct title rivals this season, following a 6-3 defeat at Manchester City and 5-1 drubbing at Liverpool. And the humbling only served to justify Mourinhos recent gibe that Wenger is a "specialist in failure" as the Frenchman went an 11th game without beating his Portuguese rival. Only five minutes after scoring the opening goal in the fifth, Etoo was forced off injured and replaced by Fernando Torres. "Arsene Wenger, we want you to stay," Chelsea fans taunted with a quick 2-0 lead. Then Hazards shot was tipped away, not by Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, but by Oxlade-Chamberlain. Despite the clearest of diving saves by an outfield player, Marriner somehow managed to identify Gibbs as the offender despite Oxlade-Chamberlain being seen admitting to the referee: "It was me." The one-game suspension is still set to be served by Oxlade-Chamberlain. Hazard scored from the penalty spot and there was no way back for Arsenal. Just before halftime, Schuerrle released Torres, who squared into the centre for Oscar to scoop in from close range. Oscars second in the 66th was in part down to a goalkeeping blunder as Szczesny allowed his curling shot from outside the area to slip through his hands. Szczesny allowed Salahs shot to roll under him four minutes later to cap an all-around dismal performance by the visitors. "This defeat is my fault, I take full responsibility for it," Wenger said. "I dont think theres too much need to talk about the mistakes we made. We got a good hiding today." EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Overcome with emotion, his hands in front of his eyes as the tears flowed, Victor Cruz couldnt hide his pain.If anything showed the extent of the knee injury that Cruz sustained against the Philadelphia Eagles, it was those tears.NFL players get hurt every week. They lay on the field, clutch or grab the injured part of their body and groan when helped off the field. The patellar tendon the New York Giants wide receiver tore in his right knee in the third quarter of Sunday nights 27-0 loss left him crying as he was carted off the field next to trainer Byron Hansen.Cruz underwent successful surgery Monday afternoon. The surgery was performed by team physician Dr. Russell Warren at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. The best his teammates and Eagles players could do was tap him on the shoulder in support as he left the field. Its the second straight year the 27-year-old Cruz had his season ended early by a knee injury. He had surgery on his left knee in December after being hurt against Seattle. This one seemed far more serious for the fan favourite who entertains Giants faithful with salsa dances after catching touchdowns.Coach Tom Coughlin said Monday that Cruz, who had 23 receptions for 337 yards, a touchdown and a team-high 14.7 yard average, will need surgery. The coach did not know when the surgery would be performed or the length of the rehabilitation.Certainly there was a lot of pain and he is going to have to go through a lot to get back to where he was, Coughlin said of the former free agent who emerged as the Giants big playmaker. He has been challenged his whole life and I dont see him backing down from any challenge whatsoever. He is an outstanding contributor to our team in a lot of ways, one of which was on the field and the other was what he meant in the locker room. We will miss all those things.Cruz was injured on a non-contact play. The fifth-year veteran, a captain this season, tried to make a leaping catch of a fourth-down pass in the end zone with the Giants trailing 20-0. He jumped and almost immediately grabbed his knee and fell to the turf, where he lay for about five minutes.Coughlin did not indicate who would replace Cruz as the Giants (3-3) head to Dallas (5-1).It is obvious that first-round draft pick Odell Beckham Jr. will get more playing time. He might even move into the slot position Cruz played in three-receiver formations.Quarterback Eli Manning had sent Cruz a text message after the game, but he had not back from the teammate, who was a Pro Bowl pick in 2012. He said Beckham, Rueben Randle and Preston Parker have to step up and fill the void. You just hate it happened to Victor because he loves playing this game, Manning said. He loves the practices. He loves competing, making plays, he is such a team player and leader in the locker room. He has a great attitude toward the game of football, and so to see him get injured and be out for the season, I feel for him.Veteran defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka said players realize injuries happen and the best thing that they can do is continue to play hard.On the very next play you just want to go out and give it everything you got and use that as a reminder that you dont know how much time you have to play this game, Kiwanuka said. Everybody thinks Im tired this week or Im this this week, but you might not be able to play next week. A lot of guys go down and a lot of them … that injury might have a long-term effect on their career. So while you have the opportunity you have to make the most out of it.Cruz spent Sunday night at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia. He was transferred on Monday to the Hospital for Special Surgery.Coughlin also said backup cornerback Trumaine McBride sustained a dislocated thumb that will require surgery. Starting cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is a question mark against Dallas after leaving Sunday nights game with back spasms. He had been bothered by ankle and leg injuries on his right side in recent weeks.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Albert Wilson Jersey . – John Fox will coach the Denver Broncos from the sideline and not the booth upon his return Sunday five weeks after heart surgery. In early August the judge will hear final arguments that will highlight opposing portraits of the Paralympic athlete – a gun-obsessed egotist who shot girlfriend Reeva Steekamp in a rage or a vulnerable figure with a disability who pulled the trigger in a tragic case of mistaken identity. The trial has transfixed South Africans and others around the world who recall the double-amputee runner competing on carbon fiber blades at the 2012 Olympics in London. The triumphant image of Pistorius racing alongside able-bodied athletes contrasts with the anguished spectacle in the Pretoria courtroom, where he faced a blistering interrogation by the prosecutor and sometimes wailed and retched in apparent distress, spittle dripping into a bucket at his feet. Pistorius, 27, was among several dozen witnesses, ranging from neighbours who heard screams on the night he killed Steenkamp, to experts who talked about the trajectory of the four bullets he fired through a closed toilet door to a former girlfriend and a sports physician who treated the star athlete for years. Pistorius says he killed Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model, by mistake, thinking an intruder was in the toilet and about to attack him; the prosecution says he shot her after a Valentines Day argument last year. Defence lawyer Barry Roux said he had finished calling witnesses, and that some people did not want to testify for the defence because of the publicity surrounding the case. Roux said he chose not to ask Judge Thokozile Masipa to compel them to appear, and also noted that a psychiatrist who evaluated Pistorius for the defence recently suffered a heart attack was not able to testify. "We close the case for the defence," Roux said. Chief prosecutor Gerrie Nel then said the prosecution will file closing arguments on July 30 and the defence will do so on Aug. 4. He and Roux agreed to return to court on Aug. 7-8 to give final arguments before Judge Thokozile Masipa, who instructed that the media should not report on the legal summaries of either side until the final arguments start in court. Anyone responsible for a document leak is a "thief" who is undermining the interests of justice, said the red-robed juudge, who is a former journalist.dddddddddddd. Once final arguments occur, Masipa is expected to announce a further break during which she will deliberate on a verdict with the help of two legal assistants who flank her on a dais during court proceedings. The period of one month granted for legal teams to prepare final arguments will allow them to pore over the lengthy transcript of testimony, documents submitted by experts and other information in a complex trial, said Kelly Phelps, a senior lecturer in the public law department at the University of Cape Town who has closely followed the case. In April, the judge had said the court record for the Pistorius trial was already almost 2,000 pages. The trial, which began March 3, included a break of a month during which a group of mental health experts observed Pistorius and concluded he was not suffering an anxiety disorder when he killed Steenkamp. Pistorius, who is free on bail, faces 25 years to life in prison if found guilty of premeditated murder. He could also be sentenced to a shorter prison term if convicted of murder without premeditation or negligent killing. Additionally, he faces separate gun-related charges that the prosecutor has tried to use to strengthen his narrative of a pattern of dangerous and reckless behaviour by Pistorius, who once enjoyed lucrative sponsorship deals. Pistorius was born without fibulas, the slender bones that run from below the knee to the ankle. Parts of his lower legs were amputated when he was 11 months old. The last witness to testify was the athletes sports physician, Wayne Derman. He said Pistorius feels anxious, vulnerable and hindered by his disability, part of the defence effort to explain why he fired on a perceived intruder and was allegedly unable to flee. Nel, the prosecutor, countered that poor, homeless and older people can be vulnerable and said Pistorius was able to protect himself by living in a gated complex with security guards and an alarm system, and had a strong network of family and friends. The most dramatic stage of the trial was in April, when Nel questioned Pistorius for five days in a grueling cross-examination. At one point, Pistorius appeared to become emotional and said: "My life is on the line." Nel quickly responded: "Reeva doesnt have a life anymore." Justin Williams buried the winning goal in overtime, giving the Los Angeles Kings a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers in Game One of the Stanley Cup Final. The goal gave Williams eight goals and 20 points, ranking fourth in goals and tied for third in points for the postseason. Rangers D Dan Girardi wore the goat horns on the winning goal, coughing up a soft clearing attempt after he initially fanned on the puck. Kings C Mike Richards intercepted the puck, sent it to Williams in the slot and that was the game. While Kings LW Kyle Clifford played fewer minutes (9:03) than any of his teamamtes, the bruising winger contributed a goal – his first of the playoffs – and an assist. Kings D Drew Doughty was, as usual, in the middle of the action. In the first period, Doughty was stripped of the puck in the Rangers zone, leading straight to Benoit Pouliots breakaway goal. In the second period, however, Doughty made up for that gaffe, taking a feed from Williams, deftly pulling it up through his legs as he danced around before snapping in the Kings second goal. Kings D Willie Mitchell was a possession beast in Game One, on for 25 5-on-5 shot attempts for and 10 against (71.4%), while the Kings only had 42.9% of the 5-on-5 shots when Mitchell was off the ice. In score close situations, the Kings earned 55.4% of unblocked even-strength shots on goal. Mitchell had five shots on goal, for the first in a game since time since January, 2012. Kings D Alec Martinez came in on the low end of the possession scale, on for 31% (nine for, 20 against) of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. On the Rangers possession chart, D Raphael Diaz led the way, on the ice for 13 shot attempts for and seven against, while the defence pairing of Marc Staal and Anton Stralman was on for 14 shot attempts for and 20 against. The Rangers second goal was scored by LW Carl Hagelin, whose speed was very effective throughtout the game, creating chances as he would burst past Kings defencemen that had trouble keeping up. Hagelin, who has seven playoff goals to lead the Rangers, led the Blueshirts with five shots on goal and tied Derick Brassard for the team lead with seven shots attempted. If there is something positive to take from this game for the Rangers it is that their forwards could use their speed to take advantage of the Los Angeles defence. Rangers G Henrik Lundqvist stopped 40 of 43 shots faced, and his .928 save percentage is best among goaltenders with at least six games played in this years playoffs. It was a relatively even affair through the first two periods, but the Kings dominated the third period, outshooting the Rangers 20-3, and asserting territorial control, even if it didnt result in a goal. This was a tough loss for the Rangers, who surrendered a two-goal lead and kept up with the Kings through two periods before fading late. When youre the underdog, its all the more difficult to pull off an upset when opportunities like an overtime game fall the other way. Erik Condra, Colin Greening and Mark Stone also scored for Ottawa (19-18-7), which jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first period at the Bell Centre. Daniel Briere, in his best game with the Canadiens (24-14-5), scored twice and had an assist while Brian Gionta also scored. After a scoreless second period with only seven shots for each side, Montreal mounted a comeback in the third. Briere brought his team to within one with a nifty move at the side of the net. He managed to jam the puck past Craig Anderson at 1:57 of the third off a behind-the-net pass from Tomas Plekanec. Briere, a 36-year-old former all-star, was back in the lineup after sitting out as a healthy scratch for two games. The Canadiens continued to press after his goal and put in another a few minutes later. Gionta shovelled in a loose puck at 4:46 off a point shot, after Plekanec and Briere had a crack at it first. But it wasnt enough after Ottawas quickk start.dddddddddddd Greening quieted the crowd with a goal only 13 seconds into the game on a cross-crease pass from Condra. The Canadiens had a few tough bounces to start things off. What looked like a power-play goal by Rene Bourque at 4:05 into the first period was called back after a quick whistle on a scramble in front. Briere finally tied the score 11:32 into the first period when he managed to knock in his own rebound after a pass from Travis Moen. The tie didnt last long. The Senators regained the lead on a backhand shot from Mark Stone at 13:50. Condra scored again for the Sens 14 seconds later on a pass that went off the skate of Habs defenceman Francis Bouillon. Heading into the second period with a two-goal lead, the Senators played a more conservative style and were able to limit the chances on Anderson. Both teams had just seven shots apiece in the second period. LAUSANNE, Switzerland – Left with little choice after the withdrawal of three contenders, the International Olympic Committee retained the three remaining cities Monday in the troubled race for the 2022 Winter Games. Almaty, Kazakhstan; Beijing, and Oslo made the list of finalists, as had been expected. The IOC executive board approved all three as official candidate cities, sending them through to the final stage of the campaign, rather than cut the decimated field any further. The cities must submit their detailed bid files to the IOC by next January. The host city will then be selected by the full IOC membership in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on July 31, 2015. "The IOC is very happy to see three very different approaches with regard to the organization of the games," IOC President Thomas Bach said. "This gives the IOC a choice among three diverse bids with different legacy plans, with different approaches, with different budgets." Addressing concerns that the Olympics have become too expensive, Bach said the IOC will contribute about $750 million to the host city and expressed confidence that local organizers will break even or make a profit on their operational budget. He cited a projected $200 million surplus for Russian organizers from Februarys Winter Olympics in Sochi. Potential host cities, especially in Western Europe, are increasingly wary about the financial costs of holding the games. Many have been scared off by the $51 billion price tag associated with the Sochi Games, even though Russia spent much of that record sum on long-term infrastructure projects for the entire region. "We want to encourage sustainability and the feasibility of the organization of the Olympic Games," Bach said. The 2022 bid race began with six cities, but has been cut in half by the withdrawals of Stockholm; Krakow, Poland; and Lviv, Ukraine. Lviv dropped out a week ago amid the continuing political turmoil in Ukraine. Krakow pulled out in May after Polish voters rejected the bid by a 70 per cent margin. Stockholm withdrew in January after Swedish politicians refused to give the bid financial backing. In addition, potential bids from Switzerland and Germany were abandoned before the official campaign began when voters said no in referendums. Even though Oslo – which hosted the 1952 Winter Games – made the final cut Monday, its candidacy remains uncertain. The Norwegian government has yet to back the project and wont make a decision until the autumn, probably in November. Polls have shown that more than half the population opposes the bid. "It wasnt very surprising but is confirmation that our application is strong," Oslo Mayor Stian Berger Roesland said after the IOC announcement. "Should Parliament and the government decide (to support the bid) we have a historic opportunity to be awarded the games after so many strong cities have withdrawn." Beijing, which hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics, is bidding to become the first city to host both the summer and winter games. The Chinese capital proposes holding alpine events 120 miles (190 kilometres) away in the city of Zhangjiakou. With Pyeongchang, South Korea, hosting the 2018 Winter Games and Tokyo the 2020 Summer Olympics, however, the IOC would normally be reluctant to send the games to East Asia for a third consecutive time. Almaty, the commercial capital of the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan in Central Asia, hosted the 2011 Asian Games and will host the Winter University Games in 2017. The 2022 race poses a serious challenge for the IOC and Bach to find cities willing to host the games. Changes to the bidding process and efforts to reduce the cost of the games are among the key issues being addressed by the IOC as part of Bachs "Agenda 2020," his roadmap for the future of the Olympic Donte Jackson Panthers Jersey . - Canadian tennis star Eugenie Bouchard has signed with WME-IMG, saying the sports management powerhouse will help maximize the value of my brand. Seven years of losing has brought many different faces, players and management, to the annual pre-season get-to-know-the-team round up.Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. This week they discuss Jason Collins ignoring homophobic slurs, Sam Tagesons big day with the San Jose Sharks, Alex Rodriguez in the news again, and Sidney Crosbys Hart Trophy case. Bruce Arthur, National Post My thumb is up to Jason Collins of the Brooklyn Nets. Remember Jason Collins? Big guy, sets screens, commits fouls, plays defence, and recently the first openly gay player in any of North Americas four major sports leagues. He never did much as a player; he still doesnt. And in his first 10 games since signing with Brooklyn, Collins hasnt been a distraction, hasnt created a media circus, and says that only one opposing player has thrown homophobic slurs his way. And how Collins reacted to that was important. He could have named names, damaged the guys reputation, and cost him a big league fine. Instead, in the manner of Jackie Robinson, Collins ignored the slurs. He just played, with dignity. By doing nothing Jason Collins showed that nameless idiot what mattered, and that it wasnt him. Steve Simmons, Sun Media My thumb is up to the San Jose Sharks, and not because theyre my pick to win the Stanley Cup. Well get to that in another show. This week the Sharks made the most meaningful transaction since the trade deadline. They signed 17-year-old Sam Tageson to a one-day contract, and turned one day into a lifetime of memories for many. Tageson was born with a debilitating heart condition that prevents strenuous activity. But against his doctors advice, he has never stopped playing hockey. The Sharks signed him to a one-day deal, had him practice with the teamm, dress with the club, hang around the players, and then skate out through that gigantic shark head and stand at the blue line for the national anthem.dddddddddddd The crowd, the bench, the building, went crazy. For one night, there was crying in hockey and everybody loved it. Dave Naylor, TSN Radio 1050 My thumb is down to Alex Rodgriguez, who once again is embroiled in controversy, this time over supposed unpaid legal fees racked up while he was trying to defend himself from the season-long suspension. If you thought we could look forward to this baseball season to some respite from more A-Rod controversy, well, think again. Theres some disputing the legitimacy of this weeks reports, with suggestions that A-Rod fully intends to pay his bills. And since he has a net worth reported at more than 300 million, why wouldnt we give him the benefit of the doubt? Wait a minute … Alex Rodriguez? Benefit of the doubt? Oh, nevermind. Dave Hodge, TSN My thumb is up in agreement with Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Bylsma, who thinks Sidney Crosby is due to win the Hart Trophy for the second time, though I will take issue with Bylsma when he says there is "no question" that Crosby is the NHLs most valuable player. I do think theres a question – Im not sure why when the Penguins captain is running away with the scoring race and has appeared in all of Pittsburghs 70 games to lead the Pens to a certain Metropolitan Division title, but NHL watchers seem to want to consider other candidates. One problem with that - theres no answer to the question: who else should win? The next time you want Crosby to be better, name someone who is. DENVER – Outfielder Xavier Nady has agreed to a minor league contract with the Colorado Rockies. The 34-year-old had agreed to a minor league contract with Kansas City in December and was hitting .310 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs with Triple-A Omaha. His deal with Kansas City gave him the ability to terminate the contract if he was not added to the major league roster by May 1, and he was released by the Royals on Sunday to allow him to sign with Colorado. DETROIT – Mike Babcock insisted being a lame-duck coach next season for the Detroit Red Wings would not be a problem for him. Babcock has one year left on his contract, and told reporters on Tuesday that getting a new deal this off-season is not a priority. "When youre at the stage of my career that I am, Im real comfortable with whatever they want," he said. "I want them to be happy. If theyre not happy, then Im not happy. "I can go year to year." Babcock finished his ninth season as Detroits coach on Saturday at Boston, where the Bruins eliminated the Red Wings in Game 5 of their first-round series. He has won a franchise-record 415 games, a Stanley Cup and a pair of conference championships. He led Canada to a second straight Olympic gold medal earlier this year. "If you put down a list of the best coaches in the National Hockey League, hes on that short list," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said. Holland said he has not begun talking to Babcock about negotiating a long-term deal. The Red Wings have Holland under contract for one more year with a team option for another year, and he is "assuming" to have talks with ownership about his future with the franchise this summer. Detroits decision-makers will also have some other topics to ponder, heading into the NHL draft in June and free agency in July. Daniel Alfredsson might be the only unrestricted free agent the team wants to re-sign. TThe 41-year-old forward chose to chase a Stanley Cup with a one-year deal after spending his entire career with the Ottawa Senators.dddddddddddd Alfredsson, though, is not sure if he wants to return or retire. "Its going to be at least a few weeks," he said. "You need time to get away from it. Ill talk to Kenny and Babcock later this week. Both sides want to know what the other side is thinking." Unrestricted free agents David Legwand, Dan Cleary, Mikael Samuelsson, Jonas Gustavsson, Kyle Quincey and Todd Bertuzzi may have to continue their careers elsewhere. The 39-year-old Bertuzzi said he definitely does not want to retire if Detroit decides to let him hit the market. "Id like to keep playing," he said. "I still feel like I can contribute." The Red Wings are counting on their two stars, Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk, to contribute more than they did during injury-shortened seasons. Zetterberg expects to return 100-per cent healthy after having back surgery two months ago. Datsyuk said he will soon find out if he needs to have surgery on his left knee. "A healthy Pav and Z makes everyone else score more," Babcock said. "Z came back for two games (in the playoffs) and suddenly we have a power play. We didnt have a power play till that. To me those are the guys capable if healthy that can make everyone else around them better." ST. JOHNS, N.L. – Andrew Gordon scored a hat trick and goalie Michael Hutchinson stopped 39 shots to lead the St. Johns IceCaps to a series-clinching 4-1 win over the Albany Devils in Friday night American Hockey League action. John Albert also scored for the IceCaps, who won the best-of-five series 3-1. Jon Merrill replied for the Devils, while Keith Kinkaid made 29 saves. Gordon opened the scoring for the IceCaps 3:47 into the game. He tapped home a loose puck in a crease-scramble after Jason Jaffray tried to score from the side of the net and pushed the puck into the crease following Kinkaids initial pad save. Gordon scored his second of the night at the 7:52 mark of the second period, scoring a high wrister blocker wide from the top of the right faceoff circle while shorthanded. The Devils closed the gap to one when Merrill blasted a slapshot from the point through traffic less than two minutes later. Gordon completed the hat trick on the power play late in the second with some great hand-eye co-ordination after batting the puck into the net off of a rebound on a Josh Morrissey shot to make it 3-1 St. Johns. Albert put the nail in the coffin when he picked up his own rebound driving to the net and scored a tap-in while falling, on the backhand, with 2:10 left in the second. Jimmy Graham Jersey . The six-foot 196-pound native of Salmon Arm, B.FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Rob Gronkowskis season appears to be over after he hurt his knee when hit after a reception. The New England Patriots star tight end, who missed the first six games recovering from off-season forearm and back surgeries, was injured just before the midpoint of the third quarter Sunday and driven off the field on a cart. Gronkowski suffered a suspected torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and is expected to undergo an MRI on Monday. Coach Bill Belichick said he was taken to a hospital for evaluation. The Patriots beat the Cleveland Browns 27-26 on Tom Bradys two touchdown passes in the last 61 seconds. "Weve sustained some pretty big injuries this year with really important, critical players," Brady. "I think we all feel sorry for Rob, but I dont think anyone feels sorry for the Patriots." Gronkowski raised his right arm to the crowd as he left on the cart with team physician Dr. Thomas Gill sitting next to him. Gronkowski was hurt on a hit by Browns safety T.J. Ward after a 21-yard reception with the Browns leading 12-0. Ward was among many players from both teams who went up to Gronkowski before he left the field. "My intention is never to hurt anyone. Thats not what this game is about. Thats not how I play," Ward said. "I hate to see guys go down with any type of injury. I just wanted him to know, whether he accepted it or not, it wasnt intentional to injure him. But we have to play this game. We have to play it the way that they force us to, and unfortunately, it incurred an injury for him." Ward said if he hit Gronkowski high, there wwas a chance he might be fined.dddddddddddd "Its not a decision where Im going to go low on every play," he said, "but, actually, it has kind of turned into that in those situations, in those split-second decisions where you have a guy running down the field whos 280 (pounds), and Im 200, and the fact that if you do even hit him in his chest and he decides to hunch down or flinch or lower his head, then I could have the chance of being fined." "Its kind of being caught between a rock and a hard place," Ward said. "Its a decision you have to make, but you have to follow the rules at the same time." He said he had been fined three times and "I dont like playing for free." Asked if he had an issue with Ward hitting Gronkowski low, Belichick said, "Thats a question you should take up with the league." The Patriots (10-3) have won three straight games and hold the No. 2 spot in the AFC despite numerous injuries. Gronkowski, wide receiver Danny Amendola, running back Shane Vereen and defensive players Vince Wilfork, Jerod Mayo and Tommy Kelly all have missed an extended amount of time. In the six games before Sunday, Gronkowski led NFL tight ends with 37 catches and 560 yards receiving. He had two catches for 32 yards Sunday. Now hes out again. "As a team, we want him to play," Patriots cornerback Devin McCourty said, but "you just hate to see that for him. A guy thats battled back through his arm and his back (injuries) and been very productive for us this year, it stinks to see him get carted off the field like that." SAN FRANCISCO – Giants slugger Michael Morse received a couple of batting tips from home run king Barry Bonds during spring training. He obviously heeded the advice. Morse homered for the second consecutive game to back another stellar outing by Tim Hudson, and San Francisco beat the Cleveland Indians 5-1 on Friday night. "One thing Barry told me was just go up and try to get hits," Morse said. "Home runs are a product of good swings." Morse might have been channeling Bonds a bit when he hit a towering blast to right-centre off Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco. The leadoff shot in the fourth went to one of the deepest parts of the park and is Morses sixth home run of the season. He also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the first. "For a guy to hit the ball where he hit it, a man has to do that," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said. "I guess thats why hes got the nickname The Beast." Hunter Pence had two hits and two RBIs while Brandon Crawford also knocked in a run to help the Giants win in their first interleague game of the season after going just 6-14 against the American League in 2013. Hudson (3-1) scattered four hits over seven innings and struck out five. He walked two, ending an impressive streak of 30 consecutive innings without one. Michael Bourn tripled and scored Clevelands only run. Jason Kipnis and Nick Swisher added two hits apiece for the Indians, who lost for just the second time in six games. The Giants jumped on Carrasco for two runs in the first inning, then rode the pitching of Hudson and two relievers to the win in their first game against a team outside of the NL West this season. Hudson had not issued a walk in his first four starts this season before giving up a free pass to Carlos Santana with two outs in the first. It was the longest walk-less streak to start a season by a pitcher in the majors since Tiny Bonhams 33-inning stretch for the New York Yankees in 1944. Hudson also walked Santana in the sixth. Beyond that, San Franciscos crafty right-hander was solid in his first start against the Indians since May 30, 2004. He pitched out of two-out, two-on jam in the first and retired nine straight after giving up an RBI single to Nick Swisher in the third. "It was a nice streak to start the year," Hudson said. "Obviously it was not going to continue all year. Thats not typically the kind of pitcher I am." Jeremy Affeldt pitched a scoreless eighth and Javier Lopez worked the ninth to complete the five-hitter. Morse, who homered twice in Wednesdays extra-inning win over Colorado, made it hold up with a sacrifice fly in the first and a leadoff home run in the fourth, a booming shot to centre on an 0-2 pitch from Carrasco. Pence added an RBI triple in the first and an RBI single in the third. Both times he drove in Angel Pagan. Carrasco (0-3) allowed four runs over six innings. The right-hander, winless over his past 17 starts dating to 2011, struck out six and walked one. He didnt get much support, either. The Indians had two runners on in the first, sixth and eighth but failed to score each time. The bottom six spots in Clevelands lineup went 0-for-21. "We couldnt generate enough offence to climb back in," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "(Carrascos) fastball was kind of what plagued him tonight right from the get-go. He was scattering some fastballs and I think thats what got him in a little bit of trouble." Pagan had two hits in his return to the Giants lineup after being limited to a pinch-hitting role on Wednesday. San Franciscos leadoff hitter underwent an MRI on Thursday and was diagnosed with what manager Bruce Bochy called a "chronic small tear" of the patella tendon in his right knee. The Giants made it 5-1 when slumping Pablo Sandoval tripled in the seventh and scored on Brandon Crawfords single. Sandoval, who went into the game batting just .165, was dropped to sixth in the Giants order and went 1-for-3. NOTES: Bochy said he plans to keep Morse in the No. 5 spot as protection for cleanup hitter Buster Posey. Morse leads the Giants with 17 RBIs. … RHP Tim Lincecum (1-1), who pitches for San Francisco on Saturday, has struck out 24 hitters in 21 innings. … RHP Zach McAllister (3-0) goes for the Indians and has not allowed a home run in 31 consecutive innings dating to 2013. Pat Richards early try for the Dragons was all that separated the sides at half-time and although the hosts extended their lead after the interval when Vincent Duport touched down, Corey Thompsons converted score and Rhys Hanburys penalty levelled matters at 8-8 after an hour. But Dave Taylor and Eloi Pelissiers converted tries in the final quarter of an hour, plus Thomas Boscs drop goal, gave Catalans a 21-8 victory, their fourth success in a row, as they moved level on points with the third-placed Vikings in the Super League table. Widnes had topped the standings ahead of the Easter schedule but suffered back-to-back defeats, and they were once again without inspirational captain Kevin Brown in Perpignan. The home side started brightly and had swift reward when Richards crossed in the fourth minute for the opening try.Duport made the initial break and a smart short side play from Pelissier saw Taylor send Richards over in the left corner. Richards missed the conversion. Pat Richards scored for Catalans but was not at his best with the boot Catalans continued to have the better of the first half, but unforced errors prevented Taylor and then Tony Gigot from extending the home sides lead.Gigot then had a video referee decision go against him, determining that Gigot had not returned to the field after putting his foot on the touchline in the build-up to touching down the loose ball.ddddddddddddn the stroke of half-time Hanbury missed a penalty attempt from 40 metres out for Widnes. The Dragons were also on top at the start of the second half, and again scored early. Taylor was the provider down the left, this time sending Duport over to score. Again Richards missed with the conversion and the score remained 8-0. Corey Thompsons try was not enough to stop Widnes falling to the Dragons Widnes roared back into the game, building pressure on the Catalans line with a string of penalties and forcing a goal-line drop-out. From that field position a superb wide ball from Joe Mellor sent Thompson in down the right for his 11th try of the season. Hanbury converted to narrow the Catalans lead to two points.A Hanbury penalty goal on the hour mark levelled the score, but Widnes failed to build on their fightback.Taylor scored his try from close range following a fortunate ricochet from Duports kick through. Richards converted from the left to give the hosts a 14-8 lead.With six minutes remaining Bosc added a drop goal from 15 metres before Pelissier wrestled his way over the line to the left of the posts from short range to give the hosts a comfortable last few minutes. MOSCOW – Maxim Kovtuns two confident quads gave him a big lead after Fridays short program in the Rostelecom Cup, the last of six Grand Prix events before the final. As the only competitor to try two quads, much less complete them, Kovtun ended the day nearly nine points ahead of Japans Tatsuki Machida, who opened with a clean quad but then stepped out of the triple toe loop that was the second jump in his combination. Javier Fernandez of Spain was in third despite falling on his quad. In the womens short program, Russian Julia Lipnitskaia was in the lead, followed by Carolina Kostner of Italy, the 2012 world champion. American teammates Agnes Zawadzki and Mirai Nagasu were one-hundredth of a point apart at third and fourth, though well behind the two leaders. Kovtun is gunning for the sole Russian mens slot in Sochi, which Turin Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko also wants. Plushenko was to have been part of the Rostelecom field, but withdrew from what would have been his first top-tier competition since back surgery this spring. Plushenko blamed his withdrawal on a knee injury. "I was interested in trying my strength against such a fantastic skater," Kovtun said. "But I hope I will have another chance at Russian nationals." Kovtun was strong throughout his flamenco-themed program, the only notable flaw that he was almost sitting on the landing of his second quad to keep his balance. Machida, who won gold at Skate America, lamented that he was not in good condition in Moscow, but said its not clear whats troubling him. "Actually, I dont know," he said when asked about the specifics. Fernandez, the European champion and world bronze medallist , expressed satisfaction despite his fall. "I think I just had a little problem in the pattern and I just need to keep my mind clear," he said. All four of the top women did triple-triple combinations. But Lipnitskaia landed a more difficult triple lutz-triple toe combo while Kostner, Zawadzki and Nagasu all did triple toe-triple toes. In pairs, four-time world champions Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy led after the short program, followed by Russians Vera Bazarova and Yuri Larionov and Canadas Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch. Lipnitskaia, who won gold at Skate Canada, will qualify for the Grand Prix final with a medal of any shade in Moscow. Kostner would qualify with a gold, but Zawadzki, after a seventh-place finish in the Cup of China, is out of contention. The top six skaters in each discipline qualify for the final, which is Dec. 5-8 in Fukuoka, Japan. Lipnitskaias program began on a mysterious note, with her crouched down and drawing figures with her finger on the ice. Asked what thats all about, she chose to keep the meaning hidden. "Everyone can see what he wants to," she said. But once she rose from the crouch, the 2012 junior world champions program was crystal-clear: a clean triple-triple, a precisely landed double axel and a very fast combination spin at the end. The veteran Kostner, who said she is contemplating retirement after the season, said she was soothed by being back on the ice at Moscows Luzhniki Small Arena. The arena was the practice rink for the 2005 world championships, where she won her first world medal, a bronze. "It feels very special," Kostner said. "Its funny to see so much time has passed." The top pairs all struggled, notably Savchenkos hard fall on a throw triple axel, a challenging move that the pair daringly puts almost at the end of their program when their energy has flagged somewhat. "Its a risky element," Szolkowy acknowledged. "We tried it in several positions; we found at the end it is best." Bazarova put her hand down on the pairs opening triple toe loop and landed awkwardly on the throw triple loop, but said it was all an improvement over last weeks Trophee Bompard, where the pair was fourth. "Today, we got the maximum levels," she said. Moscovitch took his fall in stride, saying, "I was working on some yoga positions on the landing." Former Sabres captain Steve Ott, on the other hand, just might. Fresh off clearing Buffalos books of the remaining seven years of Ehrhoffs contract, Murray is targeting veteran role players to augment his teams young roster once the NHLs free-agency period opens Tuesday. "Id like to acquire a couple of veteran guys who can play the game, but can also show our kids how to be pros," Murray said Monday. "So Im going to focus on at least two of those guys." And that makes Ott a candidate to return to Buffalo after he was part the Sabres trade that also sent goalie Ryan Miller to St. Louis in February. Murray said Ott is on the teams list of free-agent candidates, and added hes had preliminary discussions with the players agent. Ott was expendable at the time of the trade because he was in the final year of his contract. Murray, who spoke highly of Otts leadership ability before the trade, was careful to make sure Ott left on good terms by dealing him to a contender. As for Ehrhoff, who signed a 10-year, $40 million contract three years ago, Murray said the defenceman wasnt interested in being part of the teams rebuilding process. The way Ehrhoffs contract was structured was another factor. Under NHL rules, the Sabres would have faced a significant salary-cap penalty if Ehrhoff retired before the final year of his deal. "This seemed to be the best course of action for us to move on, be out from under that contract," Murray said. "And now we dont have to worry about it. Now we just have to focus on rebuilding, bringing in good young players and get going here." Murray, who took over in January after Darcy Regier was fired, is taking a patient appproach to rebuilding a team that is coming off one of the worst seasons in franchise history.dddddddddddd Buffalo (21-51-10) finished last in the NHL standings, set a franchise record for losses and established a post-NHL-expansion-era low by scoring just 150 goals. Murray has set his sights on rebuilding through youth, a process that continued at the NHL draft last weekend. The Sabres made nine picks, starting with playmaking centre Sam Reinhart at No. 2 overall. Buffalo is scheduled to have three first-round picks in next years draft, which leaves Murray preaching patience. "We all want to speed things up. As soon as we got (Reinhart), I said I wish it was 2016. But its not. And you have to do it properly," Murray said. "Its not easy. Its hard. It takes a long time. And I think that were on the right track." Aside from convincing free agents to buy into his rebuilding plan, Murrays other challenge is upping the Sabres payroll to the NHL salary cap minimum of $51 million. The Sabres are currently at about $30 million after buying out Ehrhoff and the final three years of underperforming forward Ville Leinos contract two weeks ago. Murray is confident the Sabres will reach the cap minimum before the start of the season, and can do so without handcuffing the teams salary structure with expensive long-term contracts. "Im not worried about the floor," Murray said, and then broke into a smile while pointing to a reporter. "Ill sign you if I have to." The Sabres have extended qualifying offers to retain the rights of a number of restricted free agents, including centres Tyler Ennis and Luke Adam, forward Marcus Foligno, defenceman Chad Ruhwedel and goalie Matt Hackett. Defenceman Jamie McBain will become an unrestricted free agent after the Sabres did not extend him and offer. ARLINGTON, Texas – The sight of the Texas Rangers pitching staff does wonders for Kyle Seager. The Seattle third baseman had three hits, including a two-run single that sparked a four-run third inning as the Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 6-2 on Tuesday night. A career .256 hitter in four seasons, Seager is hitting .329 against the Rangers. "Ive always seen the ball pretty well here," Seager said. "Its a good park to hit in." Robinson Cano, Dustin Ackley and recent call-up Nick Franklin added two hits each as the Mariners, last in the American League in hitting, had every member of the batting order reach base during the first four innings, That backed the pitching of right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma (3-0), who allowed both runs and six hits through eight innings. Iwakuma had a streak of 17 consecutive scoreless innings end with a home run by Adrian Beltre leading off the second inning that made it 1-0. Seattle has won two consecutive games for the first time since early May. "Hes phenomenal," Seager said of Iwakuma. "Hes got great tempo and seduces ground balls." Iwakuma began the year on the disabled list with a torn tendon in his right middle finger and made his first start on May 3. He threw a season-high 99 pitches on Tuesday night. "Im not obsessed with going nine innings," Iwakuma said through a translator. "I want to go out there and do my part, and I feel like I did my part today." Rangers manager Ron Washingtons take on the Seattle starter was: "Same Iwakuma. Sinking the ball. Cutting the ball. Hitting his spots. Changing speeds. Working fast. Having early contact." Mariners catcher Mike Zunino told manager Lloyd McClendon that he thought Iwakuma was finished after throwing 90 pitches in seven innings. McClendon decided to see what more his starter had, and Iwakuma retired Texas in order in the eighth on nine pitches. "Were hoping to get him built up," McClendon said. "He ran out of gas again." The loss in the opener of a two-game set means the Rangers have either lost or split six consecutive series. Texas Colby Lewis (3-3) started on seven days rest and allowed five runs on nine hits through six innings, the longest of his seven starts this season. Lewis debuted in the starting rotation in mid-April after missing the previous 21 months following elbow and hip surgeries. Franklin was called up from Triple-A Tacoma to replace Corey Hart, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list after straining his left hamstring on Sunday. Franklin was leading the Pacific Coast League in hitting. A Texas lineup that has yet to feature second baseman Jurickson Profar or catcher Geovany Soto this season because of injury played Tuesday without first baseman Prince Fielder and centerfielder Leonys Martin.
