Leading up to SportsCentres Year In Review on Christmas Eve, TSN and TSN.ca look back at each of the Top 10 stories of 2013. Today, we look back at a memorable Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans. Super Bowl XLVII featured a solid matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers. The Ravens seemed to be a team of destiny heading into the game. Linebacker Ray Lewis announced prior to the playoffs that he would retire. The Ravens defeated the AFCs top-seeded Denver Broncos in double overtime after quarterback Joe Flacco completed a miracle pass to receiver Jacoby Jones for a 70-yard touchdown in the final minute of regulation. The Ravens then defeated the New England Patriots, who had eliminated them in the same AFC Championship game the previous year, to punch their ticket to the Super Bowl. The 49ers experienced their fair share of drama during the season as well. With a record of 8-2-1, head coach Jim Harbaugh made the decision to bench consistent quarterback Alex Smith in favour of the explosive dual-threat quarterback Colin Kaepernick in Week 12. The decision paid off as the 49ers finished the regular season 11-4-1, securing the NFCs second seed. Led by Kaepernick, the 49ers dismantled the Green Bay Packers before defeating the Atlanta Falcons en route to the Super Bowl. Though the 49ers entered as the favourite, the Super Bowl quickly seemed to be turning into a blowout. Down 21-6 at halftime, the 49ers were struggling. On the opening kickoff of the second half, the Ravens, or more specifically Jones, seemed to deliver a knockout punch. Jones returned the kickoff 108 yards for a touchdown to extend the Ravens lead to 28-6. The 49ers were reeling; the Ravens had shut down their offence and the team had no answers. That is, until the lights went out.  After a 35-minute delay due to a power outage in the stadium, the game resumed. The break seemed to recharge the struggling 49ers offence and they scored 17 third-quarter points and brought themselves back to within five of the Ravens. Baltimore opened the fourth quarter with a field goal to expand the lead to eight points. But the 49ers responded quickly, marching 76 yards in under three minutes with Kaepernick scoring a touchdown on a 15-yard scramble. The 49ers attempted to tie the game with a two-point conversion but failed on the attempt. The Ravens added another field goal, extending their lead to five and leaving the 49ers less than five minutes to score a touchdown and take the lead. San Francisco moved the ball downfield with ease, advancing 73 yards in five plays to set up first and goal from the Ravens seven-yard line with two minutes remaining. Facing fourth and goal from the five-yard line, Kaepernick threw a fade to Michael Crabtree, who was engaged with cornerback Jimmy Smith. The ball sailed over Crabtrees outstretched hands and out of bounds. Jim Harbaugh begged for a flag but none flew. The Ravens then surrendered a safety and ran out the clock on the ensuing kickoff to win the second Super Bowl in franchise history. Flacco was named Super Bowl MVP and Lewis retired a champion. Though the game seemed to be headed for a rout, one of the more shocking and bizarre turns in NFL history allowed the 49ers to fall five yards short of a Super Bowl victory. The team made the announcement Friday, after previously indicating it hoped to sign Newton to a long-termap strapped Panthers will have more time to work out a longer contract with the three-year NFL veteran and former Heisman Trophy winner. Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman did not return phone calls Friday seeking comment. Newton said earlier in thee week hes "absolutely fine" with the Panthers picking up the fifth year, but referred all contract talks to his agents and the Panthers front office.dddddddddddd "Im trying to get back to the playoffs and do something the Carolina Panthers havent ever done in back to back years," Newton said. Newton has started all 48 games during his three seasons with Carolina. Newton led the Panthers to a 12-4 record and the NFC South championship last year, completing a career-high 61.7 per cent of his passes with 24 touchdowns passing and six touchdowns rushing. The Panthers lost at home in the divisional playoffs to San Francisco. After that loss, Gettleman said he had no doubt he views Newton was the teams franchise quarterback. NEW YORK – Jason Collins second stint with the Brooklyn Nets will last at least 10 more days. The Nets signed Collins to a second 10-day contract Wednesday, and he will be in uniform when they host the Memphis Grizzlies. Collins became the NBAs first openly gay player when he signed his first deal Feb. 23. Teams can sign players to two 10-day contracts, and then have to sign them for the rest of the season if they want to keep them. Collins has appeared in all five games since his return, with three points and five rebounds in 36 minutes. The 13-year veteran played for the Nets from 2001-08. Sebastian Joseph Jersey . Louis Cardinals for the National League Wild Card, are in the drivers seat as they open the final series of the regular season, but they face a large task in the form of the Philadelphia Phillies. Brandon Allen Jersey . And former Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson certainly knows his pain. "Its pretty hard to coach there without allowing some of these things to kind of affect you," Wilson told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun in his ESPN. SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Rudy Gay watched from a sky box seat as his new Sacramento teammates easily handled the Dallas Mavericks on Monday night. The short-handed Kings looked formidable against the Mavericks. DeMarcus Cousins had 32 points and 19 rebounds, and Derrick Williams scored a career-high 31 to pace the Kings to a 112-97 victory over Dallas. Earlier in the day, the Kings completed a seven-player deal with Toronto that brought them Gay, Aaron Gray and Quincy Acy. Greivis Vasquez, Patrick Patterson, John Salmons and Chuck Hayes went to the Raptors. "I guess I came on a good day because the team was playing great," said Gay, a veteran forward who is expected to make his Kings debut Wednesday at home against Utah. "Obviously DeMarcus and Derrick played well. So this is a good start and I cant wait to get out there with the guys." A proven scorer, Gay will no doubt add more punch to a Kings lineup that has been unproductive at times this season. He was Torontos second-leading scorer and has averaged 18 points and 5.9 rebounds in his eight-year career. On this night, the Kings showed plenty of offence without Gay. Sacramento shot 47 per cent, had 23 assists, and outscored the sluggish Mavericks 24-3 on fast-break points. Using just 10 players, the Kings led by 19 points after three quarters and by as many as 24 in the fourth in winning their second straight. "We didnt care if we had 10 or 15 players, we had enough talent to win this game," Kings coach Michael Malone said. "… Our next challenge is to figure out the new guys and how theyre going to play and at what position." Malone knows one thing – Isaiah Thomas will be his starting point guard. Thomas had 24 points and a career-high 12 assists, and Jason Thompson added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Kings. Sacramento has played 13 of its 19 games at home this season, going 4-9. With Vasquez, the starting point guard gone, Thomas made his first start of the season. The teams second leading scorer and one of the NBAs most productive reserves, he got off to a great start, getting 10 points and three assists in the first quarter when Sacramento established an 11-point lead. "That little Isaiah and DeMarcus Cousins are a handful," Daallas forward Shawn Marion said.dddddddddddd "Thats a heck of a duo right there." Production from Cousins and Thomas, Sacramentos leading scorers this season, was predictable. What was unexpected were the contributions by Williams, who had struggled a bit since arriving in a trade with Minnesota on Nov. 26. Williams hit 12 of 16 shots and connected on three 3-pointers, one more than he had made entering the game. He also added five rebounds and a career-high five steals. "I finally hit a 3-point shot," said Williams, who was 0 for 5 with the Kings and 2 of 25 overall entering the game. "Its good to make that first shot, and its good when the first couple go in." Monta Ellis had 21 points for the Mavericks, who had won three straight, including the last two on the road. The loss also snapped a five-game win streak against the Kings. Dallas had won 15 of the previous 16 meetings and was 23-3 against the Kings dating to April 4, 2006. Dirk Nowitzki had 18 points, Jose Calderon scored 11 and Shane Larkin had 10 for Dallas. Coming off an impressive win Saturday at Portland, the Mavericks shot 40 per cent and were 5 of 27 on 3-pointers. "I dont think we took them lightly, I think they just outplayed us," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "It was one of those nights where they made a lot more plays than we did." Sacramento continued to play well offensively in the third quarter, outscoring the Mavericks 35-26 to take a 92-73 lead. Williams made a pair of 3s, had two impressive dunks, and scored 13 points. Both Thomas and Cousins had 11 points. The Kings squandered a 16-point lead in the second quarter, but scored 13 unanswered points in taking a 57-47 lead into the intermission. Ellis scored 13 points for Dallas. NOTES: Sacramento outrebounded the Mavericks 29-14 in the first half and 51-39 overall. . Dallas concludes a four-game road trip Wednesday at Golden State. . Center DeJuan Blair started his fourth straight game, but was relatively ineffective with four points and four fouls in 14 minutes. . Rookie guard Ray McCallum made a jumper with just under a minute to play for his first NBA points. He had played only one minute previously. . Cousins had nine of Sacramentos 21 turnovers. Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Eagles continued a busy Thursday morning, signing cornerback Nolan Carroll to a two-year deal. The Eagles also acquired running back Darren Sproles from the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a 2014 fifth-round draft pick on Thursday. Carroll played his first four seasons with the Miami Dolphins after being selected in the fifth round of the 2010 draft. "Nolan Carroll brings good experience to our team," said Eagles coach Chip Kelly in a statement Thursday. "Hes been a starter in Miami. Hes a good athlete and hell bring good depth to our cornerback position. His skill set fits what we are trying to do on defense and special teams." He started 12 of the 16 games he appeared in last season, totaling three interceptions and two sacks. Over his career, Carroll has three sacks and five picks in 58 games, which includes 26 starts. Sevilla have been one of the stories of the season in La Liga. They sit three points off the top of the table having only lost one of their first 10 games, and on Sunday they can jump above second-placed Barcelona if they beat Luis Enriques men at the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium. Sevilla vs Barcelona November 6, 2016, 7:30pm Live on Get Sky Sports Get a Sky Sports pass They can approach the game with confidence. Sevilla lost their three-time Europa League-winning manager Unai Emery to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, but their strong start under Jorge Sampaoli has fuelled talk that they are dark horses in the title race. So whats changed? Well, 11 new signings have certainly helped, and Sampaolis high-intensity, attacking playing style has also proved a good fit for a side who already played aggressively under Emery. The big difference, however, is that Sampaoli wants them to dominate the ball, too.  Sevilla are playing possess-based football under Jorge Sampaoli The stats show its working. Their numbers for possession, short passes per game and passing accuracy have risen sharply from last season. In fact, Barcelona are the only team in La Liga to have averaged more possession. The key for us is to build our own identity, said Sampaoli earlier this season. We cannot play scared, so we must seek to dominate the game and think about our rivals goal.Sampaoli encourages his players to be brave with the ball, and its having a positive effect. Sevilla are playing slick, passing football, and on-loan Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri has been at the heart of it.  Sevillas Samir Nasri in action during their 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid Nasri is performing and showing how good he is, said Sampaoli last month.dddddddddddd He is a player at the height of his game, and he is getting us through matches. With his sharp passing, positional flexibility and clever movement, Nasri typifies what Sampaoli wants from his players. The former Chile manager is also changing things up in a tactical sense. Incredibly, Sevilla have used eight different formations in just 10 La Liga games this season. That level of tactical flexibility is unrivalled in the division, and their unpredictability makes them difficult to defend against. According to Opta, Sevilla have used more formations than any other La Liga side The likes of Steven NZonzi, Vitolo and Franco Vazquez have impressed, but Nasri is perhaps the most important player when it comes to making the system work. From defensive midfield to left wing, the Frenchman has already lined up in four different positions this season, and he has excelled in every one. The bad news for Sevilla is that Nasri is a doubt for the Barcelona game after sustaining a hamstring injury last week. His absence would be a big blow, and the stats show why. Nasris intelligent distribution is vital for Sevillas possession-game - his passing accuracy is the highest at the club - and his dribbling ability is important when it comes to keeping the ball in tight spaces. The numbers behind Samir Nasris impressive start to the season Hes a goal threat, too. Nasri scored his first goal for Sevilla against Athletic Bilbao, and he added to his tally against Leganes. There was also an important strike against Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.Without Nasri, Sampaoli and his trusty assistant Juanma Lillo would have to find new solutions. Barcelona will provide a big test of their credentials, but Sevilla have shown it would be foolish to write them off. CAPE TOWN, South Africa – South Africa must have six clubs in Super Rugby from 2016 or it will "look north," South African Rugby Union President Oregan Hoskins says, a clear threat the country will approach European competition if the southern hemisphere cant accommodate its terms. "If we dont have six teams, we might as well shut doors," Hoskins was quoted as saying by the South African Press Association and the Pretoria News in probably the strongest comments yet that SARU is willing to break up the 17-year-old southern hemisphere agreement that has been in place since rugby became openly professional. South Africa was forced to relegate one of its teams in favour of another in 2012 after SANZAR, which sanctions international rugby in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, refused to expand the three-nation, 15-team Super Rugby competition. All three countries have five clubs in Super Rugby. That opened up SARU to fierce criticism at home when it dropped the Johannesburg-based Lions at the last minute after promising the new Port Elizabeth-based Southern Kings a Super Rugby place for 2013 without any guarantee of an expansion from SANZAR. The Kings lost a promotion-relegation playoff with the Lions at the end of this season, with the teams changing places again for next year. Hoskins said South Africa wont accept anything less than six teams when a new deal and a restructured format is expected after the 2015 season. "As far as I am concerned, it is not even an issue for us, it is six or nothing when the new broadcast deal comes into effect," Hoskins told SAPA and the Pretoria newspaper on Monday. The comments were carried by the Pretoria News on Tuesday. "People didnt believe us when we said how serious it was until we had to forsake one of our provinces out of the Super Rugby," the SARU president said. "We have to do everything it takes to ensure our teams play in whatever competition. If it is not SANZAR then we have to look north." South Africa hinted at breaking away from New Zealand and Australia in 2009, when negotiations began on the current five-year TV rights deal starting in 2011. For the new 15th club, an arbitrator was needed to choose the Melbourne Rebels to satisfy Australian TV rights over a stronger bid from the Southern Kings. Hoskins threat could carry more impact this time with developments in the northern hemisphere, where English and French clubs are leading efforts to leave the European Heineken Cup competition and form another tournament. Welsh clubs last week backed the move. Hoskins also said South Africa brought more money to Super Rugby than its southern hemisphere partners, therefore enforcing its worth. "South Africa is the partner and the brand which is the biggest in the southern hemisphere in terms of commercial value, brand value, bums on seats, television viewership, the number of players we have, et cetera," Hoskins said. "So I am hoping that we are being accommodated within SANZAR. We are being told that we are being accommodated." SANZAR hasnt indicated how it might incorporate a sixth team from South Africa with the tournament currently separated into three national conferences of five teams, but Hoskins said he favoured going to 18 clubs, with six each from South Africa and New Zealand, five still from Australia and the inclusion of a team from Argentina, which joined SANZARs Rugby Championship last year. Greece was on the wrong end of a 3-0 rout to Colombia in its first game of the tournament. They surrendered a goal in just the sixth minute of the contest, and despite some promising attacking play, failed to crawl back into the match. Japan, on the other hand, struck first in its match with Ivory Coast, with Keisuke Honda putting his side into the lead in the 16th minute. A Stanley Cup champion as a rookie, Seguin followed that up by becoming the youngest player to lead the Boston Bruins in scoring. TORONTO – Given the injuries that have plagued the Toronto Maple Leafs, Nazem Kadri is just glad its not a lockout-shortened season. Kadris back from a one-game absence to attend his grandfathers funeral, but when the Leafs take the ice Thursday night against the Dallas Stars, they will be without centre Tyler Bozak and enforcer Colton Orr. Bozak will be out "an extended period of time" with an oblique strain, coach Randy Carlyle said. Bozak, who was placed on injured reserve, suffered the injury in Tuesday nights loss to the San Jose Sharks. Orr had a "procedure" on a bursa sac in his elbow, according to Carlyle. Star winger Phil Kessel will play despite leaving practice Wednesday with an undisclosed injury, Carlyle said. Kessel hasnt missed a game the past three-plus seasons, and Kadri called him the teams "iron man." "Thats a tribute to the player," Carlyle added. "He finds ways to get through the game and get through practice and get himself ready for the rigours of playing an NHL season. Those are things that wed like (from) every player on our team." But the Leafs dont have that.dddddddddddd With Bozak and Orr out, the Leafs recalled Jerry DAmigo from the Toronto Marlies of the AHL, and Carlyle called the winger an "option" to play against Dallas. "They need a spark, and hopefully I can be that spark," DAmigo said. Whether Amigo plays or not, Leafs will again have several holes in their lineup. Winger Joffrey Lupul is out with a groin injury, while centre Dave Bolland still hasnt resumed skating after suffering a severed tendon in his ankle in late October. "One of the adjustments to make when guys go down, you kind of change your game plan up a little bit," Kadri said. Carlyle chafed Thursday morning at continued discussion of injured players. His focus is on the players available to him. "The way we have to shift it is, the focus has to go on the players that are playing, not the players that arent playing," Carlyle said. "We cant change that. Thats our job and thats our mandate for our coaching staff is to focus on the things that we have control over, and thats what we have control over." OAKLAND, Calif. – Sweating out a win against the NBAs worst team isnt usually a cause for celebration. For a franchise that has felt frustration and futility for most of the last two decades, Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson is making sure his players celebrate every milestone during their long climb back to contention. Stephen Curry had 31 points and 11 assists, Klay Thompson scored 29 and the Warriors moved 18 games over .500 for the first time in 20 years with a 115-110 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday night. "You can take it for granted. Theres people thats 19 years old thats never seen this. Thats a wow moment," Jackson said. "Its an incredible accomplishment, and weve still got a ways to go. But were going to park and enjoy it, take a deep breath, appreciate it and then continue to chase down our ultimate goals." Those goals – making the playoffs, earning home-court advantage in the first round and winning a championship – are all within reach, though some are further away than others. Golden State (44-26) remains in sixth place in the tight Western Conference standings, 1 1/2 games behind Portland and 2 1/2 games ahead of Memphis and Dallas with 12 games left. The Warriors also trail fourth-place Houston by three games. "We want to try and get that home court" in the first round, Thompson said. "Its in striking distance." The Bucks (13-56) were handed another blow in a season full of them when guard Nate Wolters broke his left hand fighting through a screen in the first half. Reserve forward Jeff Adrien also received three stitches above his left eye before coming back in the second quarter. Brandon Knight had 27 points and eight rebounds, and Ramon Sessions scored 18 for Milwaukee, which has lost six straight and nine of 10 as it finishes off a forgettable season. "My guys played a very competitive game. We put ourselves in great position once again. We just couldnt make the plays down the stretch," Bucks coach Larry Drew said. The Bucks, who lost in overtime at Portland on Tuesday night, surprisingly stayed with the Warriors most of the game until Curry and company found their touch late. On one play late in the fourth quarter, Curry dribbled to his left and was fouled by Khris Middleton when he tossed the balll up – and in – with his right hand and his back to the basket.dddddddddddd Curry shook his shoulders and waved his arms in celebration, and he completed the three-point play to give Golden State a 104-94 lead with 3:59 remaining. "Once I got the contact, I was able to get the ball above my shoulders to try to find the rim at some point. And obviously thats a lot of luck involved," Curry said. Milwaukee made one last run highlighted by Ersan Ilyasovas three-point play that sliced the Warriors lead to 108-105 with 56.2 seconds left. But Thompson quickly came back with a corner 3, and Curry made four free throws in the final seconds to seal a milestone win for the Bay Areas beloved basketball franchise. The last time the Warriors were 18 games over .500 was when they finished the 1993-94 season with a 50-32 record. They also remain on track to make the playoffs in consecutive years for the first time since the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons. The Warriors have five days off after hosting San Antonio on Saturday, and Jackson has been trying to balance winning with getting his banged-up players some rest. Starting swingman Andre Iguodala (right knee tendinitis) and backup centre Jermaine ONeal (rest) sat out for the second straight game. Iguodala also will miss the game against the Spurs, while ONeal is questionable. Milwaukee hardly gave Golden State a night off. After the Warriors went ahead by 10 early in the third quarter, the banged-up Bucks came roaring back. Milwaukee took advantage of some sloppy turnovers by Golden State to go up 66-65. David Lee, who finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds, helped the Warriors put together a brief spurt capped by Jordan Crawfords 34-footer over Giannis Antetokounmpo as the quarter expired. Crawford hit another 3-pointer at the start of the fourth to stretch the lead to 10, and the Warriors held on late. NOTES: The Warriors are 13-4 since the All-Star break, tied with San Antonio for the most wins during that time. … Drew confirmed C Larry Sanders will not return this season because of a broken right orbital bone. Sanders was injured Feb. 8 against Houston and had surgery shortly afterward. … The Bucks have lost 11 straight games when theyve allowed 100 points, while the Warriors have won 10 in a row when theyve scored 100 points. While scoring has been an issue lately, the San Jose Sharks were one of the leagues stingiest teams in December. Coming off one of their worst defensive showings in five seasons, the Sharks face another challenge with tonights visit to the Winnipeg Jets, one of the NHLs highest-scoring teams in the past month. You can watch the game live on TSN3 at 6:30pm ct. or listen live or TSN Radio 1290 Winnipeg. The Jets (20-12-7) have performed well despite the absence of their top four defensemen and forward Evander Kane, winning 10 of their last 17. However, they needed a 5-1 rout of visiting Toronto on Saturday to end a season-worst three-game home losing streak and avoid a third consecutive overall defeat. It was a big game for us, you never really want to lose three in a row, said forward T.J. Galiardi, who scored his first goal in 22 games. We werent happy with the way things were going there, but we showed tonight we can bounce right back. Bryan Little extended his point streak to six games - one shy of matching a career high - with a goal and two assists. He has three goals and six assists during his run, aiding a team thats averaged 3.54 goals in 13 games since Dec. 4. Little has a team-best seven goals in that stretch, and Andrew Ladd has matched his 15 points with six goals and nine assists. San Jose (20-14-5) allowed an average of 2.00 goals last month and 1.91 in its previous 11 games before a 7-2 drubbing by St. Louis on Saturday. The Blues scored six unanswered goals while handing the Sharks their fourth loss in five contests. The seven goals allowed were the most for San Jose since an 8-2 loss in Dallas on March 16, 2010. We werent even remotely close to being in that game. … I dont know. I dont have the answer. Right now, I dont anyhow. Well try to get to it if we can, coach Todd McLellan said. Theres no excuse for us, not one. San Jose has totaled nine goals since a 3-2 win over St. Louis on Dec. 20 that capped a 9-1-0 stretch and played its latest game without one of its leading scorers. Joe Thorntons streak of 319 consecutive appearances ended because of an upper-body injury suffered in a 3-0 win in Anaheim on Wednesday. Its pretty frustrating, forward Logan Couture said. If you cant win missing one player youre not going to go too far. We didnt play at an NHL level. We didnt even compete. Thornton, who is tied for the team lead with 33 points, was put on the injured list Sunday and will miss at least two games. Sharks backup goaltender Alex Stalock kept all the Jets from scoring in the only other matchup this season, a 3-0 win in San Jose on Oct. 11. Stalock has shutouts in each of his two career games against Winnipeg while No. 1 netminder Antti Niemi is 2-2-1 with a 3.13 goals-against average in five lifetime meetings. The Jets Michael Hutchinson, owner of a league-best 1.81 GAA, could make his first start against the Sharks. San Jose has split its two games in Winnipeg since that franchise relocated from Atlanta after the 2010-11 season and lost 5-4 in a shootout in the most recent visit Nov. 10, 2013. Cheap Kentucky Jerseys Free Shipping .5 million, two-year contract with the San Francisco Giants on Thursday, a deal that covers his final two arbitration seasons.Monday afternoon is the deadline for Major League clubs to tender contacts to players who are arbitration eligible. Its usually a routine matter, but every year a few players are non-tendered and become free agents. The Blue Jays have four players who fall into this category, including catcher J.P. Arencibia, centrefielder Colby Rasmus, lefty reliever Brett Cecil and righthander Esmil Rogers, who started in the bullpen and moved into the rotation as injuries took their toll. All four figure to be offered contracts, even Arencibia, who is coming off a horrible year at the plate and not much better behind it. The most interesting case is Rasmus, who can become a free agent after this season. The Jays will tender him, but have to decide relatively soon if he is the long-term answer in centre and thus deserves a long-term contract. All this deadline talk takes me back 32 years to one of the most tumultuous off-seasons in Boston Red Sox history. In those days, players had to have their contracts mailed out to them by December 20. By some oversight or office error, the contracts of two of the BoSox biggest stars didnt get to them on time. The two were centrefielder Fred Lynn, the first American Leaguer to win the Rookie of the Year and MVP Awards (1975) and Hall of Fame catcher Carlton Fisk, who hit the iconic extra-inning homer run to send the World Series against the Reds to a seventh game. Arbitration threatened to make both players free agents. In another time, it would have been like the Yankees losing Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra. As it turned out, the Red Sox traded Lynn to the Angels for outfielder Joe Rudi and lefty Frank Tanana. Oddly enough, this trade didnt help either team as Tanana only won four games for the BoSox in 1981, while Rudi, nearing the end of a solid career, only hit .180 in his lone season in Boston. Lynn didnt fare much better, hitting only .218 for the Angels. Fisk ultimately did leaave Boston as a free agent, signing a five-year $2.dddddddddddd million contract with the Chicago White Sox and went on to further cement his Hall of Fame credentials. A mailing error like that could never be repeated in this day and age, but it sure made for a stormy winter in Boston in 1981. Shocking Signing Phil Hughes was once a prime prospect and later an All-Star with the Yankees. But first shoulder troubles then back issues made him a shadow of his former self the last three years in New York. In 2013, he was 4-14 with a 5.19 earned run average and an even worse 1-10 record at Yankee Stadium with a 6.32 ERA. Thats why it was so shocking on the  weekend to see him get a three-year, $24 million deal from Minnesota. Josh Johnson must be scratching his head becausee only got a one-year, $8 million deal from San Diego. Past Winter Dealings With the Winter  Meetings just a week away at Orlando, it was interesting to look back at the biggest trade of the 1989 meetings. San Diego dealt catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. (Robby older brother), outfielder Chris James and minor league third base prospect Carlos Baerga to Cleveland for one Joe Carter. Just after the trade was announced, Carter signed a three-year, $9.2 million contract with the Padres, making him the highest paid position player in the Majors at that time. The Indians did just fine in the deal thanks to the contributions of  Alomar and Baerga. Carter, meanwhile, only lasted one season in San Diego hitting only .232 albeit driving in 115 runs. At the following Winter Meetings almost one year to the day later, Carter and Roberto Alomar were dealt to the Blue  Jays for Fred McGriff and Tony Fernandez. The Blue Jays went on to make the playoffs in 1991, and then won back-to-back World Series titles in 1992 and 93. I still believe if Sandy Alomar hadnt been part of that first trade, Roberto may not have been dealt to the Blue Jays. Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Carter-Williams scored 17 points with 10 assists and 10 rebounds for his fifth career triple-double, helping the Philadelphia 76ers to a 103-94 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night. Luc Mbah a Moute paced the Sixers with 18 points, while Nerlens Noel contributed 14 points, six rebounds and a career-high six blocks in the win. The Sixers, who have won two straight home games since taking the first two at home last season, snapped their season-opening 17-game losing streak with a win over Minnesota on Dec. 3. Kevin Martin had 19 points, Nikola Pekovic tallied 18 points with seven rebounds and Gorgui Dieng posted 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who looked to win two straight games for the first time this season. Final Score: Atlanta 105, Portland 99 Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Atlantas All-Stars came through again. Paul Millsap, Al Horford and Jeff Teague had plenty of help as the Hawks pushed their franchise-record winning streak to 18 games. Millsap scored 21 points, Horford had 17 and Teague scored six of his 13 points in the fourth quarter as the Hawks held off LaMarcus Aldridge and the Portland Trail Blazers for a 105-99 victory on Friday night. Kyle Korver added 16 points and Kent Bazemore had 12 points in 40 minutes off the bench as the Hawks won without injured forward DeMarre Carroll, who sat with a left Achilles strain. Millsap, Horford and Teague were all named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team on Thursday, the first time since 1980 that three Hawks made the game. Atlantas Mike Budenholzer will coach the East in the Feb. 15 game at Madison Square Garden in New York. The Hawks havent lost since Dec. 26 in Milwaukee. And at 39-8, they surpassed last seasons win total (38-44). They could secure a perfect 17-0 month with a win Saturday against Philadelphia, which will end a seven-game homestand. Aldridge scored 37 points for Portland a day after he was named to the Western Conference All-Star team. Wesley Matthews added 16 points and Damian Lillard scored 13 with 11 assists. Final Score: Houston 93, Boston 87 Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - In the absence of Dwight Howard, Donatas Motiejunas had a career night to keep the Houston Rockets winning streak alive. Motiejunas scored a career-high 26 points with 12 rebounds to lead the Rockets to a 93-87 win over the Boston Celtics. Howard missed his third straight game with a knee injury. The team revealed earlier in the week that Howard is suffering from edema in the knee caused by fluid build-up in body tissues. Josh Smith deposited 15 points and James Harden added 14 with seven assists and six rebounds for Houston, which has won four straight both overall and in the series with Boston. Brandon Bass and Marcus Thornton each scored 17 points for the Celtics, who have lost three of their last four. Final Score: Toronto 127, Brooklyn 122 (OT) Brooklyn, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - DeMar DeRozan finished with 26 points and nine assists as the Toronto Raptors defeated the Brooklyn Nets 127-122 for a thrilling overtime victory on Friday. Lou Williams netted 25 points, Amir Johnson had 24 points and seven rebounds and Jonas Valanciunas supplied 14 points and 11 boards for the Raptors, who won their fifth straight win. Jarrett Jack scored a career-high 35 points with 13 assists and Brook Lopez also had 35 and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Nets, who have dropped their last four games. Final Score: Cleveland 101, Sacramento 90 Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - LeBron James returned to the Cavaliers lineup and scored 19 points, and Cleveland used balanced scoring to top the Sacramento Kings 101-90, extending its season-long winning streak. Kevin Love had 23 points and 10 rebounds and Kyrie Irving scored 21 points with six assists. Irving carried the load offensively in Clevelands win over Portland on Wednesday, netting a career-high 55 of the teams 99 points. James, who missed that game with a wrist injury, also contributed seven assists and four steals, and J.R. Smith added 16 points. The Cavs have ripped off nine straight wins since a six-game skid. DeMarcus Cousins led Sacramento with 21 points and 13 rebounds just hours after it was announced that he would make his first appearance in the All-Star game. Cousins will replace injured Lakers star Kobe Bryant, who had season- ending shoulder surgery. Rudy Gay chipped in 20 points in Sacramentos eight straight setback. Final Score: Dallas 93, Miami 72 Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Dallas Mavericks made three shots in the first quarter, scored 33 points in the first half and beat the Miami Heat by 21. How? With a 39-3 run. Charlie Villanueva scored 20 points and the Mavericks held the Heat to just three points over a nearly 14-minute span in the third and fourth quarters on the way to a 93-72 win on Friday night. Miamis stale finish – which came after Dallas started the game ice-cold from the field – tempered what was a career night for Hassan Whiteside, who set a franchise record with 14 rebounds in the first quarter. The 7-foot center ended with 16 points and a career-high 24 rebounds for the Heat, who were without Dwyane Wade because of a hamstring strain the All-Star guard suffered Tuesday against Milwaukee, which could sideline him for weeks. James Ennis added 15 points off the bench, All-Star Chris Bosh scored 12 and Mario Chalmers had 10 in Miamis fourth loss in six games. Final Score: New Orleans 108, LA Clippers 103 New Orleans, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Eric Gordon scored a season-high 28 points to lift the New Orleans Pelicans to a 108-103 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday. Ryan Anderson netted 24 points and went 5-of-11 from 3-point range, while Alexis Ajinca supplied 17 points and nine rebounds off the bench and Tyreke Evans had 11 points and 12 assists for the Pelicans, who have won five of their last six games. Chris Paul finished with 24 points, Blake Griffin scored 19 and DeAndre Jordan contributed 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Clippers, who had their six-game winning streak come to an end. Final Score: Utah 110, Golden State 100 Salt Lake City, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Gordon Haywards career game led the Utah Jazz to an improbable 110-100 win over the Golden State Warriors on Friday. The Jazz improved to 12-10 on the season when Hayward scores at least 20 points, compared to 5-20 when he nets 19 or fewer. He finished with 26 in this one to go along with a career-high 15 rebounds and six assists. Utah also got a boost from its reserves, who had just nine fewer points between them than the starters. Trevor Booker scored 17 points, Trey Burke had 15 with seven assists and Rudy Gobert had 10 points and 10 boards for his sixth double-double in January. The young 7-footer had just two double-doubles in his career before this month. Steph Curry filled it up with 32 points, seven rebounds and six assists in Golden States second straight loss, but his running mate Klay Thompson contributed just 12 points and did not connect from deep on three tries. Curry and Thompson will both represent the Western Conference in the All-Star game on Feb. 15. Final Score: Phoenix 99, Chicago 93 Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Eric Bledsoe scored 23 points, including the final four for Phoenix, to help the Suns pull away from the Chicago Bulls and cap an eight-game homestand with a 99-93 win. Goran Dragic scored 21 points for the Suns, who finished the homestand 6-2. Markieff and Marcus Morris both scored 12 points, with Markieff also contributing a season-high 14 rebounds. Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler and Aaron Brooks combined for 66 of Chicagos 93 points and Pau Gasol had 19 boards in the setback. Roses struggles from the floor continued on Friday despite scoring 23 points. He shot 8-of-23 and 0- for-6 from behind the arc. Rose is shooting 28-of-82 (34 percent) from the floor and 5-for-25 from 3 over his last three games. Pat Elflein Jersey . Reals Antoine Griezmann scored in the waning moments to cancel out Lionel Messis first-half opener but the Spanish champions still reached the domestic cup final 3-1 overall. Goalkeeper Enaut Zubikarai did his part to keep Sociedad alive at the Anoeta with several key saves but the Basque clubs attack just couldnt respond despite Carlos Vela hitting the crossbar in the 55th. Barcelona, the record 26-time cup champion, faces Madrid three years after losing to its bitter foe 1-0 in extra time in a classic final. Barcelona and Madrid go into the April 19th match having split their six previous meetings in the cup final. "Its a clasico, and theres nothing more to say," Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino said. "We were obliged to reach the final after Real Madrid ensured its place." The hosts constantly pressed Barcelona goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto but Messi proved the difference early on. He capped his individual run aat goal in the 27th minute by unleashing a shot between three defenders that Zubikarai got a touch to but couldnt keep from creeping over the line.dddddddddddd Zubikarai was sensational after that as he denied Pedro Rodriguez, with Pinto called on to deny Vela at the other end as Dani Alves arrived to clear the loose ball at the post. Andres Iniestas outstanding second half began with a near-miss just before Vela found the crossbar. Zubikarai made back-to-back stops on Messi and Cesc Fabregas while Griezmann was unlucky on the hour mark after failing to get a shot away on a break. Barcelona had done well to subdue Reals attacks but could only watch as the hosts executed a perfect counter for French forward Griezmann to equalize with three minutes to play. Martino said Xavi Hernandezs second-half substitution was because of a knock that he hoped would not become an injury. "The fact that these players reach so many finals and still value reaching another final is a great thing," said Martino, who has already led Barcelona to the Spanish Supercup during his first season in charge.
