When you had gone out fishing the last time you had to return home soon, as your favorite spinning reel was not functioning and you had noticed until you were planning to wet your line. You came back home all grumpy and cursed the maker for not having given you a product worth its monetary value.

A simple maintenance procedure of your fishing tackles could save you a lot of money and bad mood. It enhances the longevity of your precious tackles. How long your fishing reel will survive, how well it will work, all depends on how often do you break them down and go for a proper maintenance routine. There are some basic maintenance steps and if you follow them, it should be enough to make your reels last longer.

First and foremost you need a well lit work area. If you are planning to work on a table, make sure that you cover the edges with a cloth working as a boundary wall. These fishing tackles have some very tiny screws and you are going to have a tough time looking for them if they happen to fall off.  

You will need screwdrivers, pliers, reel oil, a soft toothbrush, a clean rag, grease, small plastic container with lid to keep all the miniature screws, reel schematic diagram, and a knife.

First clean the spool shaft, and add a few drops of reel oil. To ensure that the reel shaft is tight enough, check the nut at the bottom of the reel. You will see a roller guide that wraps the line around the reel pool. You need to oil the area where the bail spring meets the reel spool housing. Also add oil on the handle knob shaft and the shaft that fits inside the reel. Take off the side plate to reach the guts of the reel. If you can try taking out the main bearing and rub alcohol, kerosene, will help dissolve the oil and grease. Take the old toothbrush and clean the teeth of the main gear.

Now leave the parts to air dry. Apply little grease to each tooth of the main gear also checking for any sand, crud, dirt etc. Spraying the inside with gasoline or other harsh chemicals does not help rather it will further push the gunk inside and damage some of the plastic parts. One thing that must be kept in mind is that the grease should only be used sparingly, because it attracts dirt and sand. And will affect the performance of your spinning reel.

Now put the reel back together with the help of the diagram you have. Wipe it down with a clean cloth and you have just maintained your fishing tackle and ensured its workability. The spinning reels take a lot of abuse and they deserve to be taken care of. Maintaining your fishing reel will also relieve you of the nagging worry about the health of your fishing reel when you actually want to focus on the trout or small bass.
