We here at OutdoorHub and Carbon Media Group were saddened to hear about the passing of fellow angler Randy Llanes. Randy was struck and killed by a swordfish in Kona, Hawaii last Friday during a spearfishing trip. Family and friends remember the angler as a kind-hearted man who would do anything for those he loved.

“Randy would do anything for you, he would take his shirt off his back for you. That’s the kind of guy he was,” Bomboy Llanes, Randy’s cousin, told local press.

Randy once wrote that Hawaii was “one of those rare places where sea monsters still exist and world records can still be broken.” According to the angler, being the captain of the Sundowner and introducing new people to fishing was one of the proudest accomplishments of his life.

“Born and raised in Hawaii, I have deep family roots here in Kona,” he wrote. “It has been my good fortune in life to have a career in the world of sportfishing. With eighteen years as a licensed charter boat captain and over twenty-five years of fishing in Hawaii, please let me introduce you to the exciting world of offshore fishing. My greatest pleasure is being able to share the excitement and natural wonder of the Hawaiian offshore fishing experience with others.”

Randy’s presence in the fishing community was immeasurable and he will be sorely missed. He leaves behind a wife, daughter, and young son. Bomboy and Randy appeared on Season 1 of GillzNFinz on CarbonTV, in which the anglers successfully caught and released a 500-pound blue marlin. Randy’s personal best was a 990-pound marlin, just short of his goal of landing a “grander,” or a marlin weighing more than 1,000 pounds.
