Man cited in killing of buck 'Bow Tie' in Milwaukee County park

Jason Elliott, 29, of Milwaukee was issued three citations Tuesday accusing him of killing a white-tailed deer in a Milwaukee County park.

The 12-point buck, known to many as "Bow Tie" for its distinctive white throat patch, was killed by Elliott with a crossbow in the Menomonee River Parkway in Wauwatosa, authorities say.

Elliott shot the deer about 2 p.m. Dec. 13. No hunting is allowed in the Milwaukee County park system.

A hiker who encountered Elliott provided information that led to the citations.

The Department of Natural Resources issued citations to Elliott that total $1,540 in fines, including failure to validate or attach a deer tag ($1,147.50), hunting with improper license ($226.40) and hunting without proper colored clothing ($166.10).

Elliott had an archery deer license but did not have a crossbow upgrade, according to Kevin Mickelberg, DNR warden supervisor. Elliott also was not wearing blaze orange as required to hunt deer on Dec. 13.

Although the witness said Elliott was not wearing a backtag, the DNR did not cite him for that violation.

Mickelberg said Elliott had no prior DNR citations. The agency will seek a one-year revocation of Elliott's hunting privileges as well as confiscation of his crossbow.

Elliott could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

In 2011, Elliott pleaded guilty in Waukesha County Circuit Court to a misdemeanor charge of criminal trespass and a misdemeanor charge of entering the building of a former employer. He was ordered to pay about $1,900 in fines for those charges.

The body of the illegally killed deer is being held by the DNR as evidence.

Randy Crawford, a hunter and wildlife photographer from Wauwatosa who nicknamed "Bow Tie," said fines never seem adequate for the illegal killing of wildlife.

"I think poaching would decrease if fines were stiffer," Crawford said. "It's hard to catch them, but something should be done to send a message."

A hearing on Elliott's citations is scheduled for Jan. 12 in Milwaukee County Circuit Court.
